Beachy Head Lighthouse closure threat

Beachy Head Lighthouse under threat of closure

Beachy Head LighthouseTrinity House, the organisation that operates lighthouses along the coastline of England and Wales has announced a consultation on the possible closure of six lighthouses around the British Coast, including Beachy Head lighthouse at Eastbourne in Sussex.

The lighthouse has been operating constantly since 1902. A spokesman for Trinity House said: “Due to the greater use of, and reliance on new navigational technology, landfall and passing lights are now less important.”

The spokesman said however that there were 69 lighthouses left in England and Wales, a decline of about 20 in the last 40 years, and some vessels would want to carry on using visual aids. “It is our intention to provide them for the foreseeable future,” he said.

Orfordness Lighthouse, near Woodbridge, Suffolk, Hartland Point, overlooking Lundy Island in Devon, Blacknore, in Portishead, Skokholm, off Pembrokeshire, Wales, and Maryport, in Cumbria are the other five lighthouses threatened with closure.

The Eastbourne and Willingdon MP Nigel Waterson said the lighthouse at Beachy Head should stay because smaller vessels rely on it.

The Consultation runs until the 29 January.
