Stortford potholes, the state of Britain's roads

Add News

Date: 30th April 2009

A report out today from the Annual Local Authority Road Maintenace (ALARM) depicts the shocking state of Britians crumbling carriage ways.

Motorists now encounter a pothole, on average, every 120 yards. This will cost a staggering £1BN to clear the backlog and will take 13 years. In all, a total of 968,195 were filled in by local councils last year, costing £67 in England, £71 in London and only £46 in Wales.

The report noted: 'There is widespread concern over their number which indicates that road conditions are deteriorating. The presence of so many potholes represents a challenge to authorities who seek to maintain the safety and integrity of their roads and who have to deal with compensation claims from the general public for injury or damage to vehicles. Filling potholes is costly compared to the a planned preventative maintenance programme and exacerbates the vicious circle of 'catch-up' work required.'

Today's report also said the Government should take 'preventative action' to treat the roads before the problems occur and are treated in a 'patch and mend' manner. Compensation claims and staff costs exceeded £47million last year - compared to £63.2million spent filling them in.
